History

Atlantic Contracting & Material Co., Inc. takes great pride in being a fourth generation, family owned company. The company traces it’s roots back to the early 20th century as R.T. Madden Company, initially building gravel roads in Wisconsin, and progressing into curbs, gutters, and highway concrete paving all over the Midwest and East Coast.

In the 1950’s, R.T. Madden’s son, John, joined the business and helped to expand the capabilities of the company into aggregate crushing and recycling, and demoltion.

Over the years, John and the R.T. Madden Company continued to progress in the concrete paving industry gaining recognition and winning several paving awards. Notably, R.T. Madden Company was a large contributor to West Virginia’s road building initiative in the 1970’s, paving over 200 miles of concrete pavement highways.

In 1984, John Madden relocated the company to the Metropolitan Washington DC area, and renamed the company to Atlantic Contracting & Material Co., Inc. Also around this time, John’s son, Tom and Michael, joined the company. Since then, the company has played a major role in the growing regions’ development of transportation infrastructure, including airport and highway construction. Most notably, ACM has been a key player in building Dulles International Airport, Baltimore Washington International Airport, and Andrews Air Force Base, amongst many other airports and military bases in the Mid-Atlantic region. Additionally, ACM has paved hundreds of miles of highways in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina.

In 2003, with Tom Madden becoming President, the company expanded its capabilities to include mass excavation, grading, and underground utilities. In 2011, Tom’s son, Matthew Madden, joined the company, further cementing the rich family legacy.

More recently, ACM has expanded its crushing & recycling division. The company is now a go to service provider for the biggest contractors and aggregate producers in the region. Additionally, ACM has expanded its earthwork and utility capabilities in the Delaware/Maryland market. All the while continuing to be one of the regions leading concrete paving general contractors for military and commercial airport construction projects.
